Image: The Department of Statistics at the University of Georgia partnered with Data Scientists at Wells Fargo to offer a Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Camp from July 15 - 19, 2024 (8am to 5pm). This was held in-person at the University of Georgia Campus. Twenty high school students, selected mostly from across the Athens/Atlanta metro area, participated in this camp. This week-long, hands-on learning program was a fun and creative way to gain exposure to Data Science and Artificial Intelligence to the high school students. 2024 Feedback From Students: "The camp was very entertaining, as I learned new things such as linear regression and advanced models in data science. As previously stated, I learned new information in data science such as advanced models and different neural networks, layers, hyper parameters, etc. This camp helped me dive deeper into my interest in computer science and I found it very useful in the data science aspect, to the point where I can continue to the next level of computer and data science. The camp was a great experience." "I enjoyed the camp. It was an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in a hands-on learning environment and engage with Wells Fargo data scientists and UGA professors in data science and AI. I gained foundational skills in Python and data analysis, exploring statistical concepts and their applications through linear models and distributions. I delved into advanced modeling, including neural networks and machine learning, and worked on image manipulation using GANs. Additionally, I applied AI to virtual environments and completed a computer vision project focused on detection using a Rock-Paper-Scissors game as a test case. The camp significantly advanced my understanding of AI and data science, aligning perfectly with my goal of merging public health and AI. Presenting my AI start-up proposal to Wells Fargo data scientists and UGA professors was a highlight that provided valuable feedback and insights. I’m grateful for the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and peers who share similar interests. This experience has motivated me to further explore the intersection of AI and public health." From Parents: "AI is such a vast area and you guys picked up the right content for this course -Neural Networks/Deep learning, that is awesome." "Everyday they built their knowledge on all parts of machine learning and we could see their learning in the project demos." "To summarize, this course made them AI Heroes in no time." "You guys should do this often, and thanks to Wells Fargo for lending their expertise." Type of News/Audience: Departmental
